You took that big step, completed and submitted the contact form. Maybe this is your first time, or maybe you have done this before, either way, it can be a nerve wracking experience.
So, now what happens? How does it work?
The consultation session:
Once I receive your message, I will contact you via your preferred contact method, and we will set up your initial appointment, the free 20-minute consultation session.
The consultation session is where your needs are discussed and I answer any questions you may have about the process of psychotherapy.
It is completely optional but I highly recommend it, as it would give you an idea about my therapy style.
It is also important for you to see the space where your sessions will take place and feel safe there.
In other words, the consultation session helps us see if we can make a good team together.
After the consultation session, if we decide to work together, we will book your first session.
The intake session:
Your first session, usually known as the intake session, is unlike the following sessions, so it can feel a bit strange.
We will start off with going over the informed consent form and signing it.
Once we sign the informed consent form, I will get to know more about you and the problem that caused you to seek psychotherapy by asking you a series of questions.
The purpose of the intake session is for us to create the most accurate and whole picture of you.
In other words, I will go over all there is to know about you to help gather a picture to help us out.
You can expect to talk about your childhood, your family of origin, your relationships, your interests, hobbies, overall physical and mental health, and your current symptoms.
The intake session and the questions I will be asking are required so that a treatment plan can be formed based on your needs and goals.
The intake session is 50 minutes long and can sometimes take 2 sessions.
Once the intake session is done, we create a treatment plan and start working on your goals during your scheduled sessions.
